Extrafilm's mail order lab comes full circle

Extrafilm founder Rob Tolmie said he was pleased to announce the merger of the National Photos film processing business with Extrafilm, which occurred late in March.

Extrafilm, has been at the forefront of photo imaging solutions and a leader in the online photo market in Australia since 2000. The recent joint announcement by Kodak and Extrafilm now sees the Gold Coast lab as the premier mail order photo processing company in Australia.

Keeping in line with Kodak's recently announced strategy to focus on digital camera sales and printing, the Sydney-based business of National Photos, recently renamed Kodak Direct, moved its operations to Melbourne is now concentrating on digital work from online orders.

As Extrafilm celebrates its 4th year of operation, the timely merger has put Extrafilm in a strong position for the future at a time when the landscape of photography is changing.

History of Rob Tolmie and National Photos

Rob Tolmie originally founded what was to become National Photos in Queensland back in 1977, building up the mail order business over many years until selling it to Kodak. He stayed on as Managing Director until the business moved to Sydney in 2000.

It was at that time that Mr Tolmie founded Extrafilm, and the company has been operating from purpose-built premises on the Gold Coast since that time, specialising in digitising 35mm film. "The team and I are very pleased to now be handling the Kodak film processing business," he said.

All the National Photos orders began redirection by Australia Post to the Extrafilm laboratory at the end March.

Future for Extrafilm

This now makes Extrafilm the primary mail order film processing company in Australia, and in a very strong position to sustain the decline in traditional film developing and the growth of digital services, over the next few years.

For Extrafilm members, this means the lab can continue to sustain a competitive pricing policy as well as offering innovation in products and services that are in the forefront of the photographic industry.
